Brother Rice is back on top in the Illinois Youth Rugby Association high school state championships.

The Crusaders, who won five straight state titles from 2002-2006, were able to reclaim the Tier I championship on Memorial Day.

In a defensive game hampered by rain and wind, Brother Rice pulled out a 7-6 win over the Naperville Warriors at the Blaze Complex in Lemont.  Read more

Waubonsie Valley Tier 2 Boys Champions

Waubonsie Valley and Montini had split in two regular season meetings but the teams got another chance to determine who was better.

The third meeting was no ordinary rubber match, however, since it was for the championship of Tier 2 in the Illinois Youth Rugby Association.

And to add a little extra drama to the Montini-Waubonsie series, the outcome of the Memorial Day game wasn't decided until the final whistle.  Read more and see action photos here

St. Charles Girls Champions

“Breathe in, breathe out, and do your best.”

For anyone lining up a pivotal conversion kick, those simple words of advice came from the MVP of Monday’s girls’ state title game between St. Charles and Plainfield, Torie Engbloom.

It was Engbloom’s 2-point kick after a try earned by teammate Seri Steppenhagen that ultimately provided the difference in a 12-10 win for St. Charles, which won its first state title in girls’ rugby.  Read more and see action photos here.

The wildest game played at the Illinois State Championships was the Middle School game.

The Arlington Stallions ultimately topped the Palatine co-op squad, 41-31, in a middle school contest that was tied 31-31 with only 90 seconds left in regulation.

“I told you it would be a good one,” said Arlington coach Dan Bartlett.  Read more and see action photos here.
