Hi there,
Hemlock Landscapes is on Facebook!
Yes, that’s right; we now have a business listing on the social networking site that used to only be for college students. It is hard to believe that after only a few short years social networking has become a major part of business’ networking activities. Remember the days of roll-a-decks and business cards? Well, now with just a simple internet connection you can access Hemlock Landscapes via our website and through Facebook. Our page is still in its beginning phases but we hope to soon have photo galleries and blog postings so be sure to check it out and become a fan!

Landscape Design & It’s Benefits
Landscape Design is the art and science of physically improving and creating an environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Landscape Design as an art has principles like unity and repetition, and elements like form and line. Landscape design as a science requires horticulture knowledge and an understanding of construction materials and methods, also essential are drafting and sales skills.
The benefits of a professional landscape are numerous; increased property value, more effective use of space, beautification of the environment, easier maintenance of property and energy conservation are just a few of them. According to Money Magazine’s February 2000 edition, a professionally landscaped property can increase the value of your home by 15%, allowing owners to recoup 100-200% of their investment at selling time. This compares with the investment recovery rates for kitchen remodeling (75-125%), bathroom remodeling (20-120%), and swimming pool additions (20-50%).
Are landscape projects in your future? Call now to schedule your free consultation. We are available all winter and this is a great time to plan ahead. The staff at Hemlock can design and install an outdoor living space to fit your specific requirements.

Words of Wisdom
Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers where I can walk undisturbed.
~Walt Whitman

Plant of the season
Botanical Name: Euphorbia pulcherrima
Common Name: Poinsettia
Poinsettia plants are commonly associated with the winter holiday season. Their bright colors are not flowers but actually leaves of the plant. The flowers are small yellow structures that grow in the center of each leaf bunch. The Poinsettia is native to Mexico and grows naturally in tropical deciduous forests. While best suited as an indoor focal point, the Poinsettia can be grown outdoors as an annual in the summer. Red is the most common color but you can find Poinsettias in shades of pink and white as well.

A Garden Recipe to share
Salami, Mozzarella and Basil-Tomato Skewers
(recipe courtesy of food network)
Ingredients:
- 12 bamboo skewers
- 24 cherry tomatoes
- 24 basil leaves
- 12 ounces salami, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 12 ounces smoked mozzarella, cut into 1-inch cubes
- Olive oil
- Freshly cracked black pepper
Directions:
Soak skewers in water for 30 minutes. Preheat grill or broiler on low heat. Wrap each tomato with a basil leaf. On each skewer, thread a cube of salami, a cube of mozzarella and a basil-wrapped cherry tomato. Repeat with additional salami, mozzarella, and tomato. Place the skewers on a baking sheet. Broil 4 to 5 inches from heat about 1 minute or until just warm. (If grilling, place them on the grill over low heat, or as the coals are burning down, for 1 to 2 minutes, turning once.) Watch skewers carefully so that the cheese softens a little but does not melt. Arrange skewers on a serving platter. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with cracked pepper. Serve warm.
