Art and Heritage - a partnership

The Arts Council of Ladysmith and District and the Ladysmith Maritime Society have partnered in the old Expo building to develop an arts and heritage centre. The historic building at 610 Oyster Bay Drive overlooks the waterfront and two marinas.
The Arts Council already has the Waterfront Art Gallery on the second floor and the Maritime Society has their community docks nearby. They both want to expand their space which is given in the form of leases by the Town of Ladysmith, which owns the building.
“This is a happy partnership,” said Dennis Brown, president both of the gallery and the arts council. “We have signed a lease for an additional 1,500 square feet on the second floor beside the gallery. The space will be a communal studio for about six artists who are members of the arts council. We have no trouble filling it – we already have eight artists who would like to use the studio.
“The arts council is excited about the new studio space. It gives more interest for the public when they visit the gallery. They will walk through and watch the artists at work.”
Dave Ehrismann, executive director of Ladysmith Maritime Society, agrees with Brown that it’s a happy partnership that will benefit the town and both non-profit groups.
He has his vision for the 1,500 sq. ft. space that they will use. “Our space is the same size and also upstairs beside the arts council studio,” said Ehrismann.
“We plan to install sliding doors between the two spaces so the public can walk through the gallery and studio into the society’s space where we will have our administration office and meeting rooms, along with displays of maritime heritage. It will be an extension of our floating museum on our community docks.”
The two partners have commissioned Victoria playwright Brad Poulsen to write a play remembering the 100th anniversary of the Oct.5, 1909 coal mine disaster at Extension mine site where 32 miners lost their lives in an explosion. The play will open in the fall.
