Youth development through rugby

Hi rugger,

The Windsor Boys School from England played two games of rugby on July 4 at Lemont.  Windsor won their first game by narrowly beating the Tornados and in the second game Windsor lost in a close game to a Chicago Select Side that included many former Tornados who were on the tour to England last year.  A complete account of the games and action photos are provided by Premium Preps by clicking here.

Rugby Coaching Clinic

Newsletter photo

USA Rugby will be conducting two coaching clinics in Chicago on the weekend of August 8 and 9, 2009 for youth rugby coaches.  The two courses are:

Introducing Rugby Workshop:
This course is designed for coaches that spend most of their time introducing the game to new players. It is ideal for high school head coaches and college and club assistant coaches. The focus is being able to implement the fundamentals of the game to players that have little or no experience.

Developing Rugby Skills Workshop:
This course is designed for coaches focused on working with players with experience and aspiring to help those players play at a higher level. The course work is ideal for head coaches and those that are involved in club and all-star play. There is an emphasis on identifying key factors, practice planning, game sense and skill development.

The coaching clinics will be held at:

Chicago Hope Academy
2189 West Bowler St and 2433 West Roosevelt Rd
Chicago, IL 60612

A Parent's Salute

Coach Day,

Just want to thank you for a great season. Jake had an amazing experience, made many new friends, and of course gained strides in his rugby play – so thank you again.

Our two English guests (David Tarbox and Sam Jordan) were fine young gentlemen and great guests. On day 1, we took them to our favorite Italian restaurant in the city, then got them to bed relatively early before the match. After the match on day 2, we invited Jake’s cousin, Ryan, over (he is 17) and the four of them, with Jake’s brother Patrick, had pizza at our apartment, and then went out to a party in the city, meeting with Bernie O’Brien and Jake Rosner, plus their English guests as well. They had a fun and safe night. Yesterday, I sent the five of them to the bleachers in Wrigley and they had a great time – perfect day for a game. After the game, we had a BBQ on our building’s roof top deck, and then the boys all went out to another party – this time at North Avenue Beach. They were all home by 11, and this morning we made it to the train by 8:15 – so everything went perfectly.

Jake had such a good time this year, and this weekend, he told me he will be doing self-imposed two-a-day workouts in order to make sure he makes the Tornado's travel roster for next year… so a job well done!

Thanks. Dan McCabe
