Hi there,
Welcome to the June edition of Play & Stay enews, serving Ladysmith and area tourism industry. We welcome your submissions, stories and photos.
I was fortunate to spend four days sailing in the Gulf Islands. Have you explore our watery backyard? From Ladysmith Harbor to Galiano, Saltspring, North Pender and Russell Island, the coastline offers outdoor recreation opportunities that are limitless. The scenery is breathtaking and the wildlife is abundant. And here we sit in the gateway to the Gulf Islands, one of the world’s finest boating grounds. Wow! See you out there.

The Visions Art Studio Tour has been active for more than 25 years with summer tours of artists’ studios.
This year Visions is starting the Cowichan Arts Trail, which showcases many of the Cowichan Valley artists who have their studios open year round. The same map that will lead you on the summer tour will provide information for all year. The artists and artisans that are on the Cowichan Arts Trail include weavers, fabric artists, potters, glass artists, jewelers, silversmiths, printmakers, painters, photographers, wood turners, and sculptors. Only half an hour from Victoria, the Cowichan Arts Trail, offers drives on scenic country roads, ocean and lake views and of course, riverside retreats. Join the “Slow Food” world of organic foods and wines as you leave the bustle of the city life far behind. The summer tour is still a vibrant part of Cowichan Arts Trail. The five day art extravaganza takes place July 1 to 5, in studios from Mill Bay to Saltair but with a twist; visitors
will be able to make return journeys to many of the studios throughout the year. The Trail is self-guided and admission is absolutely free. Brochures and maps are widely available throughout the lower island. For more information go to www.cowichanartstrail.com.

A peninsula overlooking Boat Harbour in Cedar could become public land this summer, with the assent of local residents. TheRegional District of Nanaimo is hosting open houses Tuesday, June 29: 4 - 8 pm, Cranberry Hall
to consult with Electoral Area A residents on its proposal to acquire 2.27 acres covering most of Flewett Point, on the eastern shore of Boat Harbour.
Flewett Point borders a one acre parcel of waterfront and trails that will be secured at no cost by the RDN, as an Area A community park, through a parkland and trail dedication as part of a subdivision development by Townline. The lands include a boat ramp near Boat Harbour Marina, a trail from Boat Harbour to Pylades Drive, and a trail east of Pylades Drive to the ocean. The trails will be established for public use this summer.
“Flewett Point includes a beautiful coastal bluff with views of DeCourcy, Link, and Mudge Islands, and it would make an excellent addition to the new parklands in Boat Harbour,” said RDN Electoral Area A Director Joe Burnett. “I look forward to meeting with residents to discuss the potential of this property, as well as adjoining lands that will also be secured for public use.”
At the open house RDN staff will present information on the proposed acquisition, the electoral assent process, and background on the neighbouring parklands to be secured through the subdivision process with Townline. All local residents are invited to share comments on the proposal..
Flewett Point is seen as an ideal addition to the newly secured trails and waterfront access because there are no other public lands in the Boat Harbour area, and no other seaside parks in Area A. The property also well-positioned to one day connect with the Morden Colliery Regional Trail, pending potential land-use agreements with property owners. The Morden Colliery Trail follows an old rail bed that linked coal mines in South Wellington to a shipping operation in Boat Harbour in the early 1900s.
