Gottlieb Hospital : Commemorating A Legacy through Design
How do you maintain a legacy of a medical institution as it evolves through an extensive transformation and merger with another organization? This is exactly the question H. Marion Framing President Jan Marion asked himself when he accepted a project at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park. Not many people know the connection between Gottlieb Memorial Hospital and the Gottlieb family business in the pinball industry.
From a historical perspective, David Gottlieb in 1927 started D. Gottlieb & Co. pinball manufacturers, one of the world’s leading pinball businesses, and later co-founded Gottlieb Hospital with his wife, Dorothy. Jan’s vision for Gottlieb Hospital involved incorporating this relic of a bygone era into the administrative offices' current decor. “I wanted to develop a creative approach to sustaining the legacy of the Gottlieb family,” says Jan. “Using the decorative back glass of an original Gottlieb pinball machine seemed like a memorable representation of that heritage.”
Marion’s research for the project led to the acquisition of three reproductions of Gottlieb pinball back glasses from a pinball enthusiast convention, which he then transformed into framed art for installation. His pinball back glass framing innovations are true conversation pieces and have produced enthusiastic reactions. Jan Marion’s vision represents the legacy of exemplary generosity from the Gottlieb family and continues to inspire people by bringing to life a little-known history.
