Youth development through rugby

Hi rugger,

Summer is over and it is time for school again and all the good things in life that the fall season provides.  One good thing the Illinois Youth Rugby Association is providing this fall is the opportunity for young boys and girls to experience the joy of playing rugby.  The iYRA have scheduled a series of Rookie Rugby Events for boys and girls ages between the ages of six and thirteen.  If you have children in that age group we hope you will bring them along, with their friends, to one of our events.  If you are interested in holding your own Rookie Rugby event in your town or suburb the iYRA would be pleased to assist you.

Rookie Rugby

Newsletter photo

Rookie Rugby is for boys and girls that are new to the game. The emphasis is on players having fun while running with the ball, evading opponents, supporting the ball-carrier, passing, tagging the ball-carrier, and scoring points. It is a game with no tackles, no rucks, no mauls, no scrums, no line-outs and no kicking. The tackle is replaced by a tag, where the ball-carrier is touched by an opponent, with two hands between waist and knee. The players learn the basic ball-handling and movement skills of the game in the absence of the contact elements.

The following is a schedule of Rookie Rugby events that the iYRA are planning this fall in conjunction with Men and Women's rugby clubs.
